Bit O' Biology: Mission blue butterfly

  • More on the butterfly
  • Another local creature that is very specific to one native plant is the pipevine swallowtail (Battus philenor), a spectacular large, black butterfly with an iridescent green shimmer. It courses up and down the canyon walls, especially in the spring. Its large purple caterpillar, covered with red fleshy spines, can be found eating California pipevine in the canyon bottom.
