Field Trip: SUNOL REGIONAL WILDERNESS

Date: Saturday March 16, 2019

Time: 8:30 AM

Join us on this 3-mile field trip to the Sunol Regional Wilderness, from 8:30am to approximately 11:30am. Afterwards we can continue exploring on our own, if we wish. (NSAS Event)

Details:

Leader: Constance Taylor, naturalist

Description: Alameda Creek harbors an inviting creekside community of alder, willow and sycamore. Coast Live Oaks abound along with Valley and Blue Oak, Elderberry, Madrone and gray Pine. Some of the main habitats are grasslands, oak savannah, bay/oak woodlands, and riparian corridors.

There are often yellow billed magpies, lots of acorn woodpeckers, and if we head up the ridges to Flag Hill we might get lucky and see Golden Eagles, Kestrels, and many other types of raptors. As many as 20 to 40 bird species are often seen in a single morning. We will plan on walking about 3 miles.

Bring binoculars, walking sticks if you have them, and water and snacks. Wear comfortable shoes, layered clothes and a hat. (rain gear if necessary).

Directions: Sunol Green Barn Visitor Center on Geary Road in Fremont.
