Field Trip: Owl Workshop and Beginning Bird Walk at Newell Open Space Preserve

Date: Saturday December 01, 2018

Time: 9:00 AM

Walks and workshops aimed at beginning birders are held twice a month on Saturdays at various locations in Napa and Solano Counties. Workshops begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a bird walk from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Please note that the location for the walk has been moved to Newell Preserve to avoid the traffic caused by the Reindeer Run in American Canyon Wetlands. (Newell Preserve can be muddy after a rainstorm.) (NSAS Event)

Description: Did you know that Great Horned Owls can be found from Alaska all the way down to Patagonia? Or that they sometimes nest in old eagle or crow’s nests to save time? Join Napa-Solano Audubon for a workshop on Great Horned Owls. We’ll learn about what makes these predators so successful, and why the nest so early in the spring. Recently, Great Horned Owls have been spotted roosting in the eucalyptus trees right next to the trail at the wetlands!

The workshop will last from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., followed by a walk through the preserve. Walks are appropriate for all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). Please wear sturdy walking shoes or boots and bring water and binoculars if you have them. Weather conditions can be highly variable. Layers and insect repellent are recommended.

Directions: From Vallejo, take the 29 North to American Canyon. Turn right, going east, onto Donaldson Way East. Drive approximately one mile to the end, and make a left at Newell Drive. The parking lot will be on the right. Bathroom is available at the parking lot. Parking is free.
