Field Trip: Moore Creek ParkDate: Friday September 18, 2015Time: 8:15 AMWeekly Friday trip (NSAS Event) Details:Leader: Murray Berner Description: On Friday, we will visit Moore Creek Park (2607 Chiles-Pope Valley Rd) in the hills east of St. Helena. The old fire road trail follows the mixed forest canyon where a variety of vireos, owls and woodpeckers live. We see Pileated Woodpecker and N. Pygmy-Owl on every visit. With the return of warm weather, be prepared for migrating warblers, flycatchers and tanagers. Newly arriving winter visitors will include kinglets and Purple Finch. This hike is 3.5 miles round trip. The elevation gain is about 300 feet. A few stream crossings at the upper part require average balance skills stone by stone or across narrow plank 'bridges.' It's a great time to visit Napa's newest park. Napa carpool departs from the east side of Sweeney's in Riverpark shopping center in south Napa at 8:15 am. Riverpark is located off Imola between Jefferson and Coombs Sts. Arrival at Moore Creek will be about 9 am. Restroom facilities are available. On October 2nd, I hope we can visit (weather permitting) Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands. October 16th, we try Lynch Canyon for more raptors. Read more about these trips on the Friday Bird Walks page. |
