Description: Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is notable as California’s largest coal mine. This 6,096 acre preserve consists of chaparral, foothill woodland, grasslands, riparian, and an evergreen forest that makes up the north east approach to Mt. Diablo. A tour of the mine is also available for those interested after birding for $5.00 per person. Bring: Lunch, water, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, hat and sunscreen. It can be warm this time of year.

Directions: South on Highway 29 to Jamieson Canyon/Highway 12 merging onto Interstate 680 south at the Cordelia Junction. Continue south on Highway 680 over the Benicia/Martinez Bridge to Highway 4. Go east on Highway 4 to Pittsburg. Exit Highway 4 onto Somersville Rd. Go south on Somersville Rd. entering the preserve and proceed to the visitor center.
