Field Trip: Big Island

Date: Friday November 07, 2014

Time: 7:15 AM

Weekly Friday trip (NSAS Event)

Details:

Leader: Murray Berner

Description: This week it's Big Island at Lake Berryessa. The island is an island no longer. This a 3-mile round trip through oak woods and grassland. Eagles, kites and many smaller birds of all kinds are there. Burrowing Owl, Lewis's Woodpecker and Yellow-billed Magpie are possible. The lake is always in view with different birds on the water. When accessible on foot, Big Island is an adventure for birders. It is a beautiful hike with a few modest grades but is largely easy traveling.

Napa carpool leaves from the east side of Sweeney's sport shop in Riverpark shopping center at 7:15am. Riverpark is off Imola Ave between Jefferson and Coombs. Napa is the lone carpool location. Our destination at the lake is Oak Shores day use area at 5560 Knoxville Rd, about 0.6 mile north of the BOR field office. Since most of Oak Shores is closed for the season, we need to be at the lake around 8 am in order to be let through a gate by BOR Ranger Mike. If you go on your own, turn into Oak Shores and wait in the small parking lot just past the kiosk. The 'trail head' is at Coyote Beach. We will likely be in the field until noon. Plan on a leisurely tour of the south one-half of the island.
