Field Trip: Skaggs Island

Date: Friday February 10, 2012

Time: 9:00 AM

Weekly Friday trip (NSAS Event)

Details:

Leader: Murray Berner

Description: Birding this week is part of the San Fracisco Bay Flyway Festival. I'm leading Skaggs Island trips the three days: Friday 9am, Saturday 12 noon, Sunday 9am; each lasting four hours. Once you are on the Island, I lock you in. We search for raptors via the automobile, stopping frequently to scan the sky, take short walks, look at roosting owls, consider the moment. Birds seen last week include four species of falcon, Rough-legged Hawk, Swamp Sparrow.

There are three ways to join the Friday field trip. 1) Meet at the Mare Island festival hdqtrs 'Outing Tent' at 8:30 am where you will be gathered into a carpool to drive to the island. 2) Be at the usual Riverpark location at 8:15 am for carpooling from Napa to the island. 3) Drive to the island on your own. I recommend any but option 3. Once at the island, carpools will be further consolidated to minimize the length of the caravan.

To reach Skaggs Island, take Hwy 37 west from Mare Island. There no longer seems to be a sign marking Skaggs Island Rd, it is the only right hand turn between Mare Island and Hwy 121, and lies about 2/3 the way west between those two points. Once on SI Rd, procede to the top of the bridge.
