On Valentine’s Day 2014 a pair of small falcons, American Kestrels (Falco sparverius), discovered a nesting opportunity in the backyard of our suburban home in Benicia, CA. We were instantly riveted by “The Kestrel Show” that followed, via this incredibly up-close window on their lives that featured frequent dramatic developments: Daily we laughed, cried, cheered, worried, and celebrated.

In this presentation I will share the story of “our” Kestrels, which has continued for six consecutive nesting seasons so far – and I will also review the population status and conservation outlook for these charismatic birds of prey that were once very common.
